A DEXA (also called DXA) scan is a quick, low-dose X-ray test that measures bone density—most commonly at the hip and spine. It helps assess fracture risk and can be used to screen for osteoporosis or osteopenia.

Who should consider a bone density test?

Talk with your healthcare provider about whether DXA screening makes sense for you.

Common reasons include:

• Women age 65+ (routine screening is commonly recommended)

• Postmenopausal women under 65 with higher risk factors

• Men age 70+ (often recommended to discuss with a provider)

• Adults age 50+ who have had a fracture from a minor fall or injury

• People on long-term medications or with medical conditions that can weaken bone (your provider can advise)
   

If you’re younger and low-risk, routine DXA screening may not be necessary—your provider can help you decide.

• You’ll lie on a padded table while the scanner measures bone density in targeted areas.

Preparation is simple, but a few details matter:

• Avoid calcium supplements for 24 hours before the test unless your provider tells you otherwise.

• Wear comfortable clothing and avoid metal around the area being scanned (belts, heavy zippers, jewelry).

• Tell the scheduler if you’ve had certain imaging tests recently—your provider or Guthrie staff can guide you.
